A Passion for Découpage

Reviewed by Denise McDermott

A lot of people know Nerida Singleton as the découpage lady who is at all the craft shows. At the shows, her demonstrations and workshops make it seem so easy to do. Once you have read one of her books, you will be amazed that Nerida can still make it seem easy even when she's not there in person!

I read A Passion for Découpage a few years ago. I have referred to it many times over the intervening months. When I asked a friend a découpage question recently, she advised me to look in Nerida's book and find the answer. I did and I did.

As a reference book, it is invaluable. Even if you don't do the projects in the book, you can use the techniques on your own projects.

There is a section at the front giving guidance on such topics as Choosing a Project & Design, Preparation, Cutting, Painting, Gluing, Varnishing & Sanding, Polishing and Care of tools and finished work.

Some specialised techniques are described including Gold & Silver Leaf, Tortoiseshell Effect over Gilding, Oxidising Gold Leaf (my personal favourite), Crackle Varnish and Découpage Under Glass.

There is a large section with step by step instructions on the projects illustrating some of the techniques listed above. And there is a section for teachers at the back with helpful advice about running a class of eager découpeurs.

This is a worthwhile addition to anyone's library.
